80% of students don’t get enough sleep

TOKYOSep 4 (News On Japan) – September 3 has been declared “Autumn Sleep Day,” a day to raise awareness about health and sleep, as new data shows that nearly 80% of high school students are not getting the recommended amount of sleep.

A high school freshman commented on their sleep routine: “I usually go to bed around 12:30 a.m. and wake up around 5:30 a.m.” When asked if they only get about five hours of sleep, they responded, “Yes.”

According to a survey by the Japan Sleep Science Research Institute and other institutions, 33.9 percent of adults do not get the government-recommended minimum sleep duration of six hours on weekdays. On weekends, this percentage rises to 41.3 percent.

For lower and upper grades, the recommended sleep duration is between eight and ten hours. However, 78.1% of upper grades do not meet this recommendation on weekdays and 52.4% on weekends.

Among secondary school students, 50.7% reported getting too little sleep on weekdays. Among primary school students, this percentage was even higher, at 38.5%.

To address sleep problems in children, major companies such as eyewear giant JINS and NTT East Japan are taking proactive measures, including implementing sleep education programs.
