China’s Fujian aircraft carrier – the country’s third and most advanced aircraft carrier – began its first sea trials on Wednesday, state media reported, amid growing naval rivalry with the United States.
The Fujian, which is equipped with next-generation launch tracks that can catapult a wider range of aircraft from its deck, took off from Shanghai Jiangnan Shipyard around 8 a.m., the official statement said. Xinhua News Agency reports this.
โThe sea trials will primarily test the reliability and stability of the aircraft carrier’s propulsion and electrical systems,โ Xinhua reported, adding that since its launch in June 2022, the Fujian has โcontinued its mooring trials, equipment work and adjustments to the equipmentโ, and โmet the technical requirementsโ for conducting the tests.
