Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government will require people who lobby or otherwise act on behalf of a foreign government to publicly record the activity, a move that follows allegations that China tried to interfere in the last two Canadian elections.
The new law was introduced in the Canadian parliament on Monday, along with a series of other amendments aimed at making it easier to prosecute illegal activities of foreign influence.
Many of Canada’s comparable democracies already have foreign agent registers, including the US and Australia, but Trudeau had hesitated to introduce one because it could lead to racist practices.
