Biden says he won’t rule out using the U.S. military to defend Taiwan

US President Joe Biden has given Beijing another broadside on its most sensitive issue, saying he “does not rule out the use of US military force” in response to a possible Chinese invasion of democratic Taiwan.

Asked inside an interview with Time magazine Speaking on Tuesday if the United States were to defend Taiwan in such a scenario, the US leader noted that there is “a distinction between ground, air and naval deployments” but said the response would “depend on the circumstances .”

Biden said he has “made clear” to Chinese President Xi Jinping the long-standing US policy of refraining from endorsing Taiwanese independence, but added that he would defend the island “if China unilaterally tries to change the status quo ,” adding that Washington “has been in consultation with its allies in the region.
