Big, smoggy Bangkok gets a much-needed breath of fresh air

For more than half a century, Thailand’s state tobacco monopoly produced cigarettes en masse on a vast industrial estate in Bangkok. A steady stream of heavy trucks brought raw tobacco into the heart of the city, hauling away millions of cigarettes.

But now that cancer-causing complex has made way for something completely different: a green space that has brought fresh air to the busy, often smoggy center of Bangkok.

The transformation was a stunning success, creating a 40-acre oasis for city residents. The site – an extension of the existing Benjakitti Park – includes a 1.6 kilometer elevated walking path, water purifying wetlands, 8,000 new trees, pickleball and basketball courts and a dog walking area.
