Boeing is investigating quality issues with undelivered 787s, sources say

Boeing is investigating a new quality problem with its 787 Dreamliner after discovering that hundreds of fasteners were incorrectly installed on the fuselage of some undelivered planes, two people familiar with the matter said.

The latest in a series of production problems plaguing the U.S. planemaker involves improper tightening or tightening at a Boeing factory of more than 900 fasteners per plane – evenly distributed on both sides of the plane’s center body, they said.

There are no immediate flight safety concerns, but Boeing is working to understand what caused the problem and will decide how much, if any, adjustments need to be made once the investigation is complete, the sources said, asking not to be identified.
