China is likely to take targeted revenge after Europe raised tariffs on electric vehicles

China is likely to take limited and targeted retaliation against the European Union after the bloc unveiled tariff hikes on Chinese electric cars, with Beijing wary that a more robust response could backfire.

The EU’s decision to increase duties on Chinese vehicles to as much as 48% from next month has led it to act alongside the US, Turkey and other countries to curb a rise in imports from the Asian country limit. China’s Ministry of Commerce and the EU Chamber of Commerce rejected Brussels’ move after Wednesday’s announcement.

While retaliatory measures may help to deter further trade defense measures around the world, the danger for Beijing is that an excessive response will encourage further transatlantic alignment against China – undermining Chinese President Xi Jinping’s efforts to strengthen ‘strategic autonomy’ in Europe promotion are undermined.
