A film based on the autobiography of actor Tetsuko Kuroyanagi won an award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France on Saturday.

“Madogiwa no Totto-chan” (“Totto-Chan: The Little Girl at the Window”) won the Paul Grimault Award, the festival’s third prize in the feature film category, after the Cristal for a Feature Film and the Jury Award. Last year, the Paul Grimault Award was also presented to a Japanese film.

In her bestselling novel, 90-year-old Kuroyanagi recalls her childhood as she describes small pockets of happiness in her daily life, showing how important it is for children to nurture their distinctive personalities.

The film, directed by Shinnosuke Yakuwa, was released in December.
