Fujitsu Ltd. will begin developing a system that uses artificial intelligence to find dementia patients using images from security cameras installed near streets and in shops.
The system would consist of using the walking patterns common in dementia patients to train AI to identify them in video footage. The AI-based system will be connected to security cameras near streets and in stores to quickly find patients after they leave their homes or healthcare facilities.
With the aim of using it in or after fiscal year 2027, Fujitsu subsidiary Ridgelinez Ltd. developing it in collaboration with the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, and others.
Dementia patients are said to unconsciously drag their feet or walk with short steps. The system involves understanding these characteristics by comparing the walking styles of dementia patients and other elderly people, and training the AI โโto learn the movement of about 20 body parts, including patients’ heads, hips and knees.
Fujitsu has developed an AI-based system with the International Gymnastics Federation that analyzes gymnasts’ performance to help evaluate their performance, and the system has been used in international competitions.
Fujitsu plans to use this expertise to develop AI-based analytics technology and increase its accuracy for practical use by 2025.
