DÜSSELDORF/WASHINGTON –
Berlin is taking reports of a plot to assassinate the CEO of arms manufacturer Rheinmetall very seriously and will not be intimidated by Russian intimidation, the German government said on Friday.
A source familiar with the situation confirmed reports from CNN and others that U.S. intelligence agencies warned German authorities this year that Russia was planning to assassinate Armin Papperger, the head of Europe’s largest arms manufacturer, which produces artillery shells and military vehicles for Ukraine.
A US official said, without confirming the report, that Russian attempts to carry out subversive or sabotage activities have increased across Europe over the past five or six months.
