As Japan sees a rise in the number of foreign workers, an increasing number of children are arriving in the country unfamiliar with the local language and culture.
Despite the fact that these children are not subject to compulsory education, some municipalities aim for ‘zero non-enrolment’ and aim to increase the percentage of pupils who progress to full-time secondary school.
In Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture, a hub for automotive-related industries, the public and private sectors are working together with schools to support children’s Japanese language education and increase their school enrollment rates.
