In broad daylight on Thursday, visitors from a completely different world suddenly appeared in an office district of Tokyo.
They were performers in an outdoor theatrical work, โMahabharata โ Nalacharitam,โ supported by The Yomiuri Shimbun.
The work, a program at the 2023 Tokyo Festival, was performed on the Gyoko Street Special Stage, set up with JR Tokyo Station as the backdrop, in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo.
The play was produced by Satoshi Miyagi, 64, general artistic director of the Shizuoka Performing Arts Center and general director of the Tokyo Festival. This year’s Tokyo Festival events kicked off in the capital in September.
Miyagi is also the author of โMahabharata โ Nalacharitam.โ He created the play by transposing the story of King Nala, a romance from the great Indian epic Mahabharata, to Japan’s Heian period (794 to late 12th century). Since the play was first performed in 2003, it has been critically acclaimed at home and abroad.
โMahabharata โ Nalacharitamโ will be performed every day from 12 noon till Monday.
