Israel reopens food sales in Gaza as Rafah attack chokes off aid

The Israeli military has lifted a ban on the sale of food to Gaza from Israel and the occupied West Bank as the battlefield offensive is choking international aid, Palestinian officials, businessmen and international aid workers said.

Army authorities this month gave Gazan traders the green light to resume their purchases from Israeli and Palestinian suppliers of food such as fresh fruits, vegetables and dairy products, days after Israeli forces launched an attack on the enclave’s southernmost town of Rafah, the people said.

The offensive against Rafah, a key gateway to Gaza from Egypt, has effectively halted the flow of UN aid to the devastated Palestinian territory. Israel is coming under increasing global pressure to ease the crisis, as humanitarian organizations warn of a looming famine.
