TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance plans to develop an AI model trained primarily with chips from fellow countryman Huawei Technologies, three people familiar with the matter have said, as U.S. restrictions send the social media giant scrambling for chips.
ByteDance has diversified into domestic suppliers of chips used in artificial intelligence and accelerated its own development since the US began restricting exports of advanced AI chips such as from market leader Nvidia in 2022.
AI has become critical to the technology industry, with companies in sectors as diverse as gaming and e-commerce differentiating their offerings by integrating custom AI models โ programs that use pattern recognition to make decisions.
