Japan will hold a conference on Monday to discuss measures for the recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine by both the public and private sectors in Germany.

Up to 60 Japanese and Ukrainian companies will participate in the meeting, and they are expected to agree on expanding cooperation in agriculture, energy and other areas.

Japan apparently wants to demonstrate its proactive attitude towards Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction through the Japan-Ukraine public-private roundtable in the run-up to the Ukraine Recovery Conference, which will be held in Berlin on June 11 and 12 with several dozen European and other countries available.

The roundtable will be organized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and other entities. Japanese trade, logistics, consulting and other companies considering doing business in Ukraine will participate with Ukrainian companies and organizations looking to cooperate with Japanese companies.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal may also be present.

A total of 56 cooperation agreements were signed by companies from both countries to enable specific forms of support during the Japan-Ukraine Conference on Promotion of Economic Growth and Reconstruction, held in Tokyo in February. The two countries aim to reach at least ten more cooperation agreements during the upcoming roundtable conference.

The two countries plan to strengthen cooperation in developing wind power and other renewable energy sources.

In the agricultural field, the Japanese government and companies are expected to sign five memoranda of understanding for cooperation with Ukrainian entities to restore and strengthen their production capacity. Yanmar Agribusiness Co. and Kubota Corp. will start talks with the Ukrainian authorities on the supply of agricultural machinery.

Agricultural land accounts for 70% of Ukraine’s total land area, and the recovery of agriculture is an urgent initiative. The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Ukrainian Ministry of Agricultural Policy and Food will support Japanese companies operating in Ukraine by smoothing customs clearance procedures.
