PARIS โ Japanese fencers continued their stunning success at the Paris Olympics. The men’s foil team crowned the competition Sunday by winning the gold medal. It was Japan’s fifth medal in the sport.
In fencing, the team of Kyosuke Matsuyama, Kazuki Iimura, Takahiro Shikine and Yudai Nagano defeated Italy in a thrilling final, surpassing the silver medal Japan won at the 2012 London Olympics.
Japan previously won an individual gold medal from Koki Kano in the men’s epee, silver in the men’s epee team and bronze in the women’s foil and sabre teams.
The other Japanese medal winner on Sunday was golf. Former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama became the first Japanese to ever stand on the men’s podium when he won bronze.
In athletics, Abdul Hakim Sani Brown ran a personal best of 9.96 seconds in the semi-final of the men’s 100 metres, but still failed to reach the final.
In swimming, the women’s 400-meter medley relay, led by Rikako Ikee, finished in fifth place.
