Japanese electricity producer Jera warned on Thursday it could consider purchasing liquefied natural gas (LNG) and investing in Asia, the Middle East and the United States if Australia fails to provide sufficient financial support to reduce costs.
Australia now accounts for about 40% of all energy imports by Japan, which has doubled its investments there after a row with key supplier Russia over the war in Ukraine.
However, in March last year, Australia passed a stricter greenhouse gas emissions reduction law, requiring new gas projects supplying existing LNG plants to have net zero reservoir emissions, adding new costs through methods such as carbon capture and storage (CCS).
