Japan Railways Group companies have begun expanding freight transport services using their fleet of shinkansen bullet trains.
Fresh food and other items are loaded into shinkansen train cars in empty spaces and transported from production areas to major markets and other required locations.
The JR companies use the punctuality of their shinkansen operations to leverage such operations. These transportation services are set to expand further just as Japan faces the so-called 2024 problem, the name used to describe disruptions to logistics services resulting from an overtime limit for truck drivers introduced in April.
