Kyoto University targets 2030 for iPS cell therapy to combat diabetes

KYOTOSep 3 (News On Japan) – Kyoto University Hospital has announced plans to begin a clinical trial of iPS cells for the treatment of type 1 diabetes as early as February next year.

This trial focuses on patients with severe type 1 diabetes, a condition in which the cells of the pancreas do not function properly, disrupting the insulin production needed to lower blood sugar levels.

In this study, insulin-producing islet cells, made from iPS cells derived from healthy individuals, are processed into plate-shaped cells and transplanted in multiple layers into the abdomen of patients.

The treatment is expected to stabilize blood sugar levels without the need for multiple insulin injections per day.

The transplant is scheduled for February next year, with the aim of having the equipment in practice by 2030.
