Opposition lawmakers in Taiwan will make a last-ditch effort Friday to pass a bill aimed at reining in the government of new President Lai Ching-te, raising the likelihood of more major protests.
The two-day break temporarily calms tensions in Taipei, where several thousand Lai supporters and others gathered outside the legislature on Tuesday evening to express their anger over the amendments.
Only a handful of protesters remained outside parliament on Wednesday, but more are expected if lawmakers re-pass the bill. Lai’s supporters have set up tents and stocked up on water and supplies, apparently in preparation for larger protests.
