TOKYOJul 26 (News On Japan) – A dinosaur fossil found in an outcrop dating to about 110 million years ago (Early Cretaceous) in Tamba-Sasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture, has been identified as a new genus and species of the small carnivorous dinosaur family Troodontidae, which is closely related to birds.
The discovery was announced on July 25 in the online edition of the British scientific journal by a research group from the Museum of Nature and Human Activities in Hyogo (located in Sanda City, Hyogo Prefecture) and Hokkaido University.
The dinosaur, which is estimated to have been about 1.1 metres (3.6 feet) long and weighed about 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds), was probably covered in feathers and walked on two legs.
