Digital Minister Taro Kono and former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba appears set to run for president in September for the Liberal Democratic Party — a worrying sign for Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
Since the end of the last parliamentary session on Sunday, the internal maneuvering within the LDP in the run-up to the September elections has really started, with more and more lawmakers openly expressing their displeasure with Kishida.
Kono and Ishiba – both widely regarded as two of the country’s most popular politicians, but with no base within the LDP – appear to have already made up their minds.
