Emergency services in Papua New Guinea continued rescue efforts Monday to find survivors after more than 670 people were feared killed in a massive landslide that leveled a remote village in the Pacific country’s northern region.
The United Nations migration agency said Sunday that about 1,250 people have been displaced by the landslide that struck Papua New Guinea’s Enga province early Friday morning. More than 150 houses were buried and about 250 other houses in the area have been abandoned by residents.
โThe houses are buried under about 8 meters of earth. So there is quite a bit of rubble to get through,โ aid group CARE International PNG country director Justine McMahon told ABC television on Monday.
