Shibuya and Shinjuku are going to crack down on street drinking

Tokyo’s Shibuya and Shinjuku wards are introducing new restrictions to tackle persistent public drinking problems that have become increasingly common following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shibuya has decided to revise the ordinance banning alcohol consumption on the streets around Shibuya Station and extend the ban to the entire year instead of just during Halloween and other festivities. It also plans to add more areas to the ban.

The proposed amendment bans drinking on the street from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning. As with the current regulation, there will be no sanctions for violators.
