Yubaba is no shrinking violet. The owner of the mystical Aburaya Bathhouse in “Spirited Away” is always ready to make her presence known and remind you of what belongs to her and what she is in charge of.
And now, that daring, greedy nature has led the Studio Ghibli character to claim something else as her domain: pudding.
The last time we saw Yubaba, she and “Spirited Away” co-star No-Face were hanging out in an actual park in the city of Yokosuka in Kanagawa Prefecture, Tokyo’s southern neighbor. They were there to commemorate the arrival of the traveling Toshio Suzuki and Ghibli exhibition at the Yokosuka Museum of Art, which is currently hosting a display of Studio Ghibli-related artwork and other materials related to the career of veteran anime producer Toshio Suzuki the hallway is.
Yokosuka also happens to be the city where cafรฉ and pastry chef Marlowe was founded. Marlowe takes its name from Philip Marlowe, the hard-boiled private detective created by American noir author Raymond Chandler, and is especially famous for its purine, Japanese-style custard pudding, which comes in glass cups modeled with the private detective’s likeness to his movie. rendition by Humphrey Bogart.
But just as Yubaba took over the last half of “Spirited Away” protagonist Chihiro’s name, she also took over part of Marlowe’s pudding cups. From May 13, a limited number of Marlowe pudding containers will have Yubaba staring right at you, and because the containers are glass with a wide top, they’re easy to reuse as drinking glasses or storage jars, so Yubaba will be with you long after you finished the pudding.
โผ Marlowe’s purin comes in several flavors, but Yubaba uses their classic vanilla custard version, made with Hokkaido milk.
Yubaba also makes its presence known on special tins of Marlowe biscotti, another popular item from the company’s candy range.
The Yubaba purin and biscotti are only offered in physical Marlowe stores, not through the company’s online store. Most of Marlowe’s locations are in Kanagawa Prefecture, but they also have stores in Ginza Six and Seibu Ikebukuro department stores in central Tokyo, and the Marlowe branch in Sogo Yokohama department store at Yokohama Station is also not far from Tokyo .
The purine costs 994 yen and the biscotti can 1,728. Both will only be available until supplies run out. Note that neither item is for sale at the Yokosuka Museum of Art, where the Toshio Suzuki and Ghibli exhibition runs until June 18.
