British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has called a surprise British general election for July 4, with the leader battling a downpour in Downing Street and protesters preparing his Conservative Party for a crushing six-week battle to stop Keir Starmer’s opposition Labor Party. Party that does not take power.
โThis is the moment for Britain to choose its future,โ Sunak said in a statement on Wednesday, seeking to frame Britain as a nation emerging from economic shocks that should stick with it rather than gamble on a new leader. โI cannot and will not do that. not pretending that we have everything right; no government should do that.โ
Moments after the rain-soaked Prime Minister returned home, Starmer focused on Sunak and the Tories’ fourteen years in power. He promised to boost ailing public services and economic growth. โTogether we can stop the chaos, we can turn the page, we can start rebuilding Britain and transforming our country,โ he said.
