TAMBA-SASAYAMA, Hyogo – Swallows fluttering between colorful umbrellas hanging from the eaves of a building delight golfers at a country club in Tamba-Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture.

The 100 vinyl umbrellas in red, blue, yellow and other colors were installed by the staff. From spring to autumn, swallows breeding over the cart grounds and raising their young with their droppings caused a nuisance, affecting both baggage and visitors. To address this problem, in 2015 staff began hanging vinyl umbrellas upside down under the nests.

There are currently more than 60 nests and the staff warmly watches over the swallows as new ones arrive after the chicks have fledged, making it look like an apartment building.

Golfers enjoy the sight and capture it on their smartphones. A 47-year-old woman from Kishiwada, Osaka Prefecture, smiled and said, “The colorful umbrellas and swallows are both cute and soothing.”
