Tech giants are starting to treat Southeast Asia as the next big thing

Long considered a tech hinterland, Southeast Asia is rapidly emerging as a hub for industry.

The CEOs of Apple, Microsoft and Nvidia are among the industry leaders who have swept through the region in recent months, making billions of dollars in investments and supporting heads of state from Indonesia to Malaysia. Amazon took over a massive conference hall in downtown Singapore this week to unveil a $9 billion investment plan in front of thousands of people cheering and waving glow sticks.

After decades of playing second fiddle to China and Japan, the region of about 675 million people is attracting more technology investment than ever. The world’s largest companies will spend up to $60 billion on data centers alone in the coming years as Southeast Asia’s young population embraces video streaming, online shopping and generative AI.
