Vietnam’s Communist Party has appointed Police Minister To Lam as state president, the government said on Saturday, and also named a new head of parliament in a major leadership reshuffle.
Unprecedented for a one-party country once known for its stable politics, two state presidents and a speaker of parliament have resigned in less than 18 months, all for unspecified “misconduct” amid a major anti-bribery campaign that is unnerving foreign investors over its chilling effect on the bureaucracy.
Following parliamentary approval, which could come this week, Lam, 66, will replace Vo Van Thuong, who resigned in March after being accused of breaking party rules, just over a year after his appointment.
