The Japanese women’s volleyball team punches their way to Paris

Japanese women’s volleyball has qualified for the Paris Olympics, the Japan Volleyball Association (JVA) said on Friday, despite a narrow defeat to Canada last night in a Volleyball Nations League match.

The JVA received the news from FIVA, the sport’s governing body, after calculating the ranking points from Thursday. The possible points that other teams can gain from the remaining matches of the Volleyball Nations League, part of which will be held in Fukuoka Prefecture, are not enough to deprive Japan of a qualifying position for Paris.

Twelve countries will qualify for the Paris Games, seven of which have already been decided. Japan will compete for one of the remaining five spots, which will be determined based on the world rankings from Monday when the Nations League preliminary round concludes.
