TOYAMA โ A canal cruise in Toyama City began this year on March 23 after a winter break. The Fugan Suijo Line cruise, which travels through the Fugan Canal, has been jointly operated by the Toyama prefectural and city governments since 2009. The cruise departs from and returns to the city’s Fugan Canal Kansui Park.
Passenger numbers in 2021 fell to just over 30% of 2019 levels due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there was a recovery last year, reaching the second highest number of passengers in history at 63,372.
An opening ceremony of the operation was held at Kansui Park on March 23, attended by about 30 people, including officials from the Toyama Prefectural Government. Nobukazu Takeuchi, manager of the regional revitalization office at the prefecture, read a message on behalf of Toyama Governor Hachiro Nitta, saying: โThe prefecture and the city will work together to create tourism demand and develop a vibrant city.โ
This year’s activities are expected to run until November 24.
