Toyota is committed to alternative fuels in an electric future

Toyota unveiled prototypes of internal combustion engines that can run on hydrogen, along with gasoline and other fuels, in a bid to popularize alternative technologies to reduce CO2 emissions.

The world’s largest automaker, alongside Mazda and Subaru, said they are making progress in developing smaller, more efficient engines that can work with electric vehicle production platforms and meet strict emissions regulations in the future.

Encouraged by robust sales of hybrid cars, Toyota and its partners say fuel-burning engines can play a role even as the industry shifts to battery EVs in a global effort to decarbonize. Japan’s manufacturers have long been criticized for being hesitant to fully embrace electrification, while BYD and Tesla are leading the way in battery-based EVs.
