Members of the World Health Organization on Saturday extended negotiations on a landmark global agreement on tackling future pandemics for up to a year, as the head of the WHO warned the next crisis was only a matter of time.
Two years of talks on a deal ended on May 24 without a final agreement, mainly due to disagreements between wealthy countries and those feeling adrift during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The last day of the week-long World Health Assembly (WHA) – the annual meeting of the WHO’s 194 member states where decisions are made – allowed an agreement to be reached until next year’s meeting.
