Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike has finally thrown her hat into the ring, declaring on Wednesday that she plans to run for a third term as governor in the upcoming Tokyo gubernatorial election, just a week before the campaign kicks off go.
The announcement on the final day of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly meeting came after weeks of anticipation, during which the 71-year-old incumbent president found herself in “secret running” mode, or essentially starting campaigning without officially announcing her candidacy to make.
โFor the people of Tokyo, I want to make Tokyo better โ with the support of others who share the same sentiments, I am determined to implement an improved Tokyo Reform 3.0,โ Koike said. โWith this determination, I have decided to run for the Tokyo gubernatorial election in July.โ
