In a rare move, a group of Japanese citizens concerned about the effects of climate change filed a petition for human rights relief on Wednesday with the Japan Federation of Bar Associations to address the issue through legal means.
Climate Case Japan, a group founded in 2021 that claims climate change is a human rights issue, has filed a petition signed by 365 people asking the bar to submit formal requests to relevant ministries and courts to adopt stronger measures on their behalf to take climate action.
It will likely take more than a year for the Bar Association to examine the petition before deciding whether to issue a warning to โ or request specific action from โ the government.
