‘Well-being manicures’ bring a touch of color into the lives of Japan’s elderly, “Wellness manicures,” in which nail technicians visit healthcare facilities to decorate the nails of the elderly and people with disabilities, are booming in Japan.
According to a training organization, the number of certified well-being nail technicians has increased 3.5 times in four years. Healthcare facility staff report that this service significantly improves residents’ quality of life and adds a touch of color to their daily routine.
The practice of wellness manicures dates back to 2012, when Yukari Araki, a nail salon owner, offered her services to a nursing home. The overwhelming demand at the nursing home inspired Araki to establish the Japan Health Welfare Nailist Association in Kishiwada City, Osaka Prefecture, to promote the practice.
