New research reveals Hokkaido girl committed suicide due to bullying

The suicide of a 14-year-old high school girl in Asahikawa city, Hokkaido, in 2021 was most likely the result of bullying, a committee set up by the city to investigate the death said on Sunday.

“If there had been no bullying, there would have been no suicide,” the committee said of the death of Saaya Hirose, who was found frozen to death in a park in Asahikawa in March 2021.

The investigation came after a separate third-party committee established by the city’s Board of Education said in September 2022 that the causal link between the bullying and the suicide was unknown.
