Immediate action must be taken to tackle the humanitarian crisis in the Sahel, otherwise other countries will be drawn into it and it will “become a problem for the world,” a UNHCR official warned on Wednesday.
The volatile situation in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso threatens to spread to neighboring countries, Abdouraouf Gnon-Konde, director of the UN refugee agency for West and Central Africa, told reporters in an interview in Brussels.
“The Gulf of Guinea, Togo, Benin, Ghana and Ivory Coast are already suffering from the spiral of insecurity and the humanitarian situation – same with Mauritania, same with Algeria,” he said.
