Alcoholism seen as a factor in the increase in drunk driving in Japan

Three years have passed since a truck driven by a drunk driver plowed into a group of elementary school students in Yachimata City, Chiba Prefecture, killing two and seriously injuring three.

Since that tragic incident, drunk driving accidents have continued, with approximately 2,300 reported last year, an increase from the previous year. Alcohol addiction is believed to be a contributing factor.

“People addicted to alcohol often cry when they drink and wonder why they can’t stop,” said Hiroaki Shiokawa, 58, president of an abstinence association in Chiba Prefecture. Shiokawa himself has battled the same addiction.
