Alexander Zverev settles abuse case brought by ex-girlfriend

Alexander Zverev has agreed to a settlement after the mother of his child accused him of physical abuse and a German court closed the case on Friday, lawyers for the French Open semifinalist said.

The agreement includes a monetary condition of โ‚ฌ200,000 ($217,820), according to German media, with the player not guilty of any wrongdoing.

โ€œThe trial against Alexander Zverev was suspended today by the court with the agreement of the public prosecutor’s office and Ms. Brenda Patea,โ€ the player’s lawyers said in a statement.

“Alexander Zverev agreed to this… to shorten the trial, especially in the interests of the child they have together. Alexander Zverev remains innocent.”

The decision comes hours before the 27-year-old Zverev faces Casper Ruud in the last four of the French Open on Friday.

The German was ordered last year by the Berlin-Tiergarten court to pay an undisclosed fine in the case in which his lawyers challenged the court order.

The world number 4 had rejected his ex-girlfriend’s accusation that she was the victim of bodily harm during an argument in 2020.

The couple had a daughter in 2021, but by then they were no longer together.

In January 2023, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) closed an investigation launched after another ex-girlfriend, tennis player Olga Sharypova, accused Zverev of domestic violence. The ATP cited insufficient evidence as a reason to drop the case.
