K2 Pictures, a new film production startup led by veteran producer Muneyuki Kii, aims to disrupt Japan’s film industry.
Kii explained at a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18 that he and his collaborators will “create a new ecosystem for Japanese cinema.” This would include better working conditions for crews, such as protections against overtime and sexual abuse, and better returns for creators.
Key to Kii’s ambitious plans is the creation of the K2P Film Fund, a film production fund structured according to internationalized legal and accounting standards to make it easier for foreign partners to participate.
