Constitutional Democratic Party officials cancel fundraisers amid criticism

Executives of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP) said they will cancel their planned political fundraising parties in an apparent attempt to deflect criticism from government and opposition lawmakers who question the party’s consistency over its plan to legally prohibit such practices.

CDP Secretary General Katsuya Okada had planned to hold the party in Osaka Prefecture on Monday, but told reporters on Saturday that he will switch to a regular lecture and refund all money for the event.

The reason for quitting the party was because โ€œ… it is a rather sensitive time now, as bills to revise the Law on Control of Political Funds are being discussed in Parliament. I didn’t want to have any negative impact on the deliberation,โ€ Okada said.
