A new deadlier strain of MPox that is more easily transmitted between people is killing children and causing miscarriages in Congo and may already have spread to neighboring countries, researchers warn.
All countries must prepare for “this new strain before it spreads to other places, before it is too late,” said Jean Claude Udahemuka, a researcher at the University of Rwanda who is studying the outbreak.
A global outbreak of a new strain of MPox – formerly known as monkeypox – spread to more than 110 countries in 2022, mainly affecting gay and bisexual men. That was the clade II species.
