Female doctors linked to lower death rates in female patients

TOKYOApril 24 (News On Japan) – A University of Tokyo-led study using medical data from the United States has found that female patients experience lower mortality rates and other health benefits when treated by female doctors, compared to male physicians.

The research team analyzed the medical outcomes of more than 770,000 emergency hospital admissions of patients aged 65 and older, treated by approximately 42,000 physicians in the US.

The study took into account variables such as the patient’s age, medical condition, doctor’s age and experience level, and then compared outcomes based on the gender combination of doctor and patient. It showed that female patients had lower mortality and readmission rates within 30 days of admission when treated by female physicians than by male physicians. The researchers speculate that the improved results may be due to greater comfort and openness in communication between female doctors and patients, highlighting the possible need to increase the number of female doctors in the medical field.
