Gifu Prefecture police arrested a 37-year-old man on Thursday for allegedly stabbing his 89-year-old grandmother to death in the prefecture’s Ogaki city.
Authorities received a 911 call around 8:30 a.m. the same day from a nearby resident reporting that the elderly woman had been stabbed in the chest.
Police found the victim, Hayako Miwa, bleeding in the kitchen of her home with two stab wounds to her chest. A blood-stained knife was found nearby. She was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The attack is said to have taken place around 6:30 am on Thursday.
Following the incident, the suspect, Naoya Miwa, who lived in a separate building on the same property, fled the scene by car. He was apprehended around 9:30 a.m. that day in the city of Yokkaichi, in neighboring Mie Prefecture, and arrested on suspicion of murder.
Police said Miwa, who is unemployed, confessed to the crime, saying: “There is no doubt that I stabbed her with a knife.”
