Honda CEO apologizes to shareholders for test fraud

Honda CEO apologizes to shareholders for test fraud, Honda Motor CEO Toshihiro Mibe apologized to shareholders on Wednesday for engine testing irregularities involving the Japanese carmaker.

“We once again deeply apologize for causing great concern,” Mibe said at an annual shareholders meeting in Tokyo.

Honda Senior Managing Executive Officer Noriya Kaihara said there was no pressure from the company to commit the fraud, which he described as a “technical issue.”

The company is working hard to prevent recurrence of the irregularities by strengthening its control system, Kaihara said.

Mibe said Honda and Nissan Motor are expected to announce details of their partnership in the summer. Three of these are progress in discussions on software and core components for electric vehicles, he said.

Shareholders voted to approve a proposal to reappoint Mibe and other directors to Honda’s board.
