Is black the new green for Japanese tea farmers?

Michio Hanamizu has served countless cups of tea since he started running a tea farm fifteen years ago, but one tasting was especially memorable. Compared to his usual potential customers, this time it was particularly difficult to impress the taste buds of the participants: they were toddlers.

Hanamizu brewed a number of different teas for the children, who tasted them as part of an early childhood education program, and something unexpected delighted them.

โ€œIt seemed like the kids weren’t interested in green tea,โ€ Hanamizu recalls. โ€œBut when we made black tea for them, their eyes lit up.โ€
