Brussels, April 30 (Jiji Press) – Japan and the European Union confirmed on Tuesday that they will deepen cooperation on the regulation of digital giants’ online services.

During a ministerial meeting in Brussels, the two sides also agreed on the objective of regularly sharing related information.

Japan and the EU held a meeting for the second time on their cooperation in the digital field. The previous meeting took place in Tokyo last year.

The conference in Brussels was attended by Japanese Minister of Digital Transformation Taro Kono and Minister of Communications Takeaki Matsumoto. EU participants included Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market.

A joint statement by Japan and the EU called for further promotion of the Hiroshima AI Process, an international regulatory framework for artificial intelligence, and sharing of information, including on related guidelines established by Japan and the EU.

In the field of semiconductors, the statement said the two sides will consider establishing a team of experts for joint research on advanced manufacturing processes and ways to improve production sustainability.
