Japan marks the first ‘extremely hot day’ of 2024

Japan experienced its first “extremely hot day” on Wednesday as temperatures reached 35 degrees Celsius in Fukushima prefecture and rose above 30 degrees Celsius in parts of Tokyo, the Meteorological Agency said.

The city of Date, Fukushima Prefecture, saw the mercury rise to 35.2C around 1.55pm, while the temperature rose to 30.2C in Tokyo’s Nerima ward around 12.50pm.

In the city of Fukushima, near Date, the wet bulb temperature (WBGT) โ€“ a measure of heat combined with humidity, and by extension heat stress for humans โ€“ was 27.5 degrees Celsius at 11am, just below the Ministry of Health’s ‘severe temperature’ Environment. warning level, at which point it is said that strenuous exercise should be avoided.
