Japan plans to increase support for the export of anime, manga and other Japanese content and help content creators expand abroad.
In a draft of a revised action plan for Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s “new capitalism” initiative unveiled Friday, the government touted Japanese content, including games and music, as “Japan’s proud assets.” It indicated that it will formulate a strategy to boost the content industry and advance efforts under the strategy through public-private partnerships.
Japan’s content industry has grown enough to compete with the steel industry in terms of export value. In 2022, overseas sales of Japanese content reached ¥4.7 trillion, compared to ¥5.1 trillion for the steel industry and ¥5.7 trillion for the semiconductor industry.
